Intro
Website or social media? It's the wrong question if it's framed as either/or — but with a limited budget, sequence matters. Here's a simple way to decide what to build first.
What each one actually does
Your website is the ground you own. It works 24/7, ranks in search, converts visitors into enquiries, and no algorithm can take it away or change its rules overnight.
Social media is rented reach. It's brilliant for discovery, personality and staying top-of-mind — but you don't own the audience or the rules, and reach can change at any time.
The default sequence
For most small businesses the order is: a solid website first, then social media to drive people to it. A website is the destination; social is one of the roads that lead there. Sending social traffic to a weak or missing website wastes the hardest-won attention you have.
When to flip the order
If your product is inherently visual and impulse-driven (food, fashion, events), social can lead — but you still need at least a strong landing page to capture interest.
If you're testing an idea before committing, a single landing page plus one social channel is a cheap, fast way to learn.
The honest answer
Build the smallest strong website you can — home, core offer, contact — get the SEO foundations right, then pick one or two social channels you can post to consistently and point them at your site. Owned first, rented second.
